Postdoc position 2026

We are looking for a Postdoctoral Research Assistant in Two-Dimensional Quantum Field Simulation to join the Ultracold Quantum Matter group in the Physics Department, University of Oxford.

The project

This post is funded by an EPSRC grant to investigate quantum-field phenomena using bilayer two-dimensional quantum-gas experiments. The project builds on our platform for creating continuous, coupled 2D quantum fields from bilayer ultracold atoms at nanokelvin temperatures, held in multiple-radiofrequency (MRF) dressed potentials.

These systems allow phenomena normally discussed only in abstract quantum field theory to be created, controlled and measured in the laboratory, using the matter-wave interferometric readout that we have established for 2D quantum gases. The project will explore fundamental questions in quantum fields, with future extensions towards phenomena in curved spacetime.

You will contribute to the daily operation and development of the apparatus, implement advanced quantum-state readout methods, and work closely with Professor Christopher Foot, Professor Rob Smith, Dr Shinichi Sunami, other PDRAs, graduate students and our theory collaborators. The post also involves day-to-day supervision and training of graduate students on closely related projects. There are opportunities to teach.

Who we are looking for

You should hold, or be close to completing, a doctorate in experimental atomic physics or a related field, with proven research skills running complex experimental apparatus and a track record of obtaining, analysing and publishing high-quality experimental data.

Prior experience with ultracold atoms, vacuum and laser system design, or laser cooling of atoms or ions is highly desirable. The full list of essential and desirable selection criteria is given in the job description, and your application will be assessed solely against those criteria.

Terms

  • Full time, fixed term for 2 years
  • Research Grade 7: £39,424–£46,476 per annum
  • Based at the Clarendon Laboratory, Parks Road, Oxford OX1 3PU

You will join an established and collaborative cold-atom group working at the interface of atomic physics, condensed-matter physics, quantum information and quantum field theory, within the Atomic and Laser Physics sub-department — part of one of the largest concentrations of quantum research in the UK.
